Raleigh Chiropractor Recommends Castor Oil Packs

Castor Oil Packs

One of the most useful home therapies I recommend to patients is the use of castor oil packs.  I've read that humankind has been using castor oil packs for about 3000 years.  During the Middle Ages, castor oil was known as the Oil of Christ.

I recommend castor oil packs for their detoxification and anti-inflammatory properties.  The packs can be applied to the lower abdomen for assistance with digestive distress (constipation, IBS, chronic indigestion and bloating), menstrual cramps, uterine fibroids, UTI prevention, cystitis, as well as to the breasts and liver.  The heat provided by the castor oil pack helps to provide warmth to organs that are over-stimulated.  The pack also has strong detoxifcation qualities and has been known to assist with bile flow in the liver and inflammation in organs or joints.  I do not recommend using the packs on the head.
To make a castor oil pack, you’ll need a good quality castor oil, a wool flannel, hot water bottle/heating pad, plastic and rags/towels. Most natural food stores sell both the castor oil and wool flannel.

First, cut in half a plastic grocery bag and lay flat. Pour or soak the flannel in the castor oil until saturated but do not let it drip. Lay the soaked flannel across the abdomen and place the open plastic bag on top. Next, place a rag or old towel on top and then the hot water bottle/heating pad. Lie still for 45-60 minutes. When finished, remove the flannel and wash the area with a solution of baking soda and water. Beware that castor oil can stain so keep away from clothing.

I generally recommend the castor oil pack every 2-3 days until symptoms improve.

The Nourishing Gourmet: My New Favorite Blog!

This is a fabulous blog with a basis around sacred foods and nourishing traditions. A lot of these recipes are Dairy Free and Wheat Free by default. Remember to look for the ingredients as always!

The following comes from Kim Harris, Author of The Nourishing Gourmet
I advise you to go to be adventerous and go surf around her blog. You'll find a plethora of information!

about_kimi

Welcome to The Nourishing Gourmet! My name is Kimberly Harris and I am passionate about nourishing, healthy (and frugal!) cooking, family, and supporting local farmers. I am married to a wonderful husband, with two children (a two year old girl, and my first girl in Heaven).

My interest in healthy eating began early because of a cancer scare at the age of 16. Although I ended up not having cancer, facing disease at an early age awoke in me an interest in having a healthy lifestyle. During that time period, low fat diets were the craze, and although I ate very “healthy,” according to the experts, I feel that there were bad effects on my health from my low fat, low meat diet.

About four years ago I was introduced to Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon, and it has been a freeing, wonderful experience of relearning to appreciate real food. I have never looked back! Since then I have been able to more fully incorporate Nourishing Tradition style cooking into my life, creating my own recipes, including many dairy- and gluten-free ones. We have enjoyed discovering that our food tastes good, as well as being good for us.

Since my husband is currently back in college, I have embarked on the exciting adventure of eating nourishing food on a budget. “Waste not, want not” is a key principle for me as I learn how to best use our resources.

Join me in learning how to appreciate real food, nourish the body, and love the family here at The Nourishing Gourmet!

The information you find here at The Nourishing Gourmet is meant to help you make better eating choices. However, this site is only for informational and educational purposes. Please discuss with your own, qualified health care provider before adding in supplements or making any changes in your diet. Thank you.~Kim Harris

Holistic Twitter!

I have recently become a "twitter nut." Twitter is a networking site that is sweeping the world with its impressive semi-micro-blogging format. The amount of information one is able to get from just a glance at their twitter homepage is amazing and because of this it has swept me in.

Yesterday as I was searching holistic related contacts I came across HolisticTwitter. As i'm sure you can guess my interest was peaked. I started looking in to it and I have to say that I am impressed. If anyone is interested in not only a great networking opportunity, but also a wonderful way to satiate your thirst for health and wellness ideas and updates. You can upload and view pictures, videos, recipes, articles, and even write your own free blog!

Check out my profile at http://www.holistictwitter.com/profile/CCW_wellness
I'm choosing for now to keep my blogging status central to blogger but updates and more will definitely be posted at holistictwitter!
